Special WA Mathematical Olympiads Committee Award
The Special WA Mathematical Olympiads Committee Award was awarded for the first time in 2007.
It is intended as an occasional award, presented only when exceptional circumstances
arise. In 2007, two WA students, Ferris Xu and Jason Kong, achieved High Distinctions in the Australian Intermediate
Mathematics Olympiad and significant results in the Senior Mathematics Contest as Year 10 students,
and were consequently invited to the December School of Excellence
as Juniors. The School of Excellence is Australia's Training School for the
International Mathematics Olympiad. These Special WAMOC Awards were
awarded at the Awards Ceremony of the WA Junior Mathematics Olympiad (WAJO).
- 2011 Winners (with their achievements):
|
Alexander Chua | (Year 10) | 35 (Prize) SMC, 35 (Prize) AIMO |
| | Other: (Gold Certificate) AMO, IMO team reserve |
|
Andrew Yang | (Year 11) | (Gold Certificate) AMO |
| | Other: 23 (High Distinction) 2010 AIMO |
IMO = International Mathematics Olympiad
AMO = Australian Mathematics Olympiad
TT = Tournament of the Towns
SMC = Senior Mathematics Contest
AIMO = Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad
Alexander was invited to the December School of Excellence as a Senior, on the
strength of his perfects scores in the AIMO and SMC, though his achievements
earlier if the year in the AMO, and just missing participating in an IMO are
also exceptional.
Andrew was invited to participate in the TT at the end of 2010 on the strength
of his AIMO result in 2010; his good result in the TT earned him an invitation to
sit the AMO; his result of a Gold Certificate in the AMO, was so remarkable, that
he was invited to the April School (usually students are invited to the April School
as a follow-on from the December School after a sufficiently good performance in
the AMO - usually Bronze is enough for a Junior). The WAMO Committee considered
this amazing achievement worthy of a Special WAMOC Award “after the fact”.
